Challenger and her crew were lost 73 seconds after liftoff on 28 January 1986.

  The STS-51L crewmembers are: in the back row from left to right:
   • Mission Specialist LTCOL Ellison S. Onizuka, USAF,
  ♥ Teacher in Space Participant Sharon Christa McAuliffe,
   • Payload Specialist Greg Jarvis,
   • Mission Specialist Dr. Judy Resnik.

  In the front row from left to right:
   • Challenger Pilot CAPT MIKE SMITH, USN, USNA '67,
   • Mission Commander Dick Scobee,
   • Mission Specialist Dr. Ron McNair.

Columbia and her crew were lost during reentry on 1 February 2003, 16 minutes before landing.

  The STS-107 crew includes, from the left,

   • Mission Commander COL Rick Husband, USAF,
   • Mission Specialist CAPT Laurel Clark, MD, USN,
   • Mission Specialist Dr. Kalpana Chawla,
   • Mission Specialist LTCOL Michael Anderson, USAF,
   • Columbia Pilot CDR WILLIAM McCOOL, USN, USNA '83,
   • Payload Specialist COL Ilan Ramon, Israeli Air Force.
       * CAPT Brown was a Flight Surgeon and a Navy Pilot (A6, F18, T38)!
